Even cold air is full of energy and air source heat pumps use the freely available heat in the ambient air to provide efficient heating at extremely low temperatures in excess of -10C. Air source heat pumps can be installed indoors or outside and provide considerable benefits to installation and they do not require any underground work.

When properly installed, an air-source heat pump can deliver one and a half to three times more heat energy to a home than the electrical energy it consumes. This is possible because a heat pump moves heat rather than converting it from a fuel, like in combustion heating systems. Coupled with a good domestic hot water tank the right air source heat pump will provide all space heating and domestic hot water for a new residential property all year round at temperatures greater than 0C and can easily be boosted for those days when temperatures drop below freezing. In all cases there should be no need for any additional boilers or heating systems.

Enviko uses Daikin Altherma heat pumps - The Daikin Altherma air-to-water air source heat pump system comprises two components, an outdoor heat absorbing unit (heat pump) and an indoor heat exchanger hydro-box unit, connected by refrigerant pipe work.

Altherma incorporates the very latest in inverter and heat exchanger technology, uses the most efficient R-410A non ozone depleting refrigerant and state-of-the-art electronic controls. These technologies are harmonised to achieve the highest recorded operating efficiencies in all weather conditions (down to -15°C) producing water temperatures up to 55°C without supplementary electric heating.

Storage tank required for domestic hot water

The Indoor HB is a compact wall-mounted unit that can be located anywhere in the house. It does not require flues or ventilation. It is connected to the outdoor unit via refrigeration pipework.

The main function of the HB is to transfer the absorbed heat from the outdoor unit to the house heating and hot water system.

The extremely quiet, weatherproofed, outdoor unit can be located up to 30m from the indoor HB.

It contains the heart of the heat pump system, absorbs low grade heat from the ambient air, upgrades it to high grade heat which is transferred via refrigeration pipework to the indoor HB.

A water tank is required for domestic hot water. The stainless steel water tanks are available in 150 litre, 200 litre and 300 litre models, complete with auxiliary heater, sensor and all necessary controls.

Choosing Altherma ... nothing but benefits.

  • Less energy, pleasant warmth in your home
  • Minimal installation cost
  • Flexible configurations
  • If your current heating system is equipped with low temperature heat emitters, there is no need to change it.
  •  Less CO2 emissions
  • No risk of freezing of the outdoor piping
  • Complete comfort for your family
  • The temperature can be reduced automatically at night or during your holiday and increase in the morning or before you return.

Even at a temperature of -20°C, Altherma can still generate heat.
At these extreme conditions the Altherma can supply additional heat by means of an electrical back-up heater. On an annual basis, the heat pump itself will still supply 90 to 95% of your heating requirements.
