A commercial tool distributor contacted Enviko after being recommended from a previous client. Their primary target was to install a self-sufficient system which operated with minimal user interaction.  After carrying out a detailed heat loss calculation and feasibility report Enviko recommended installing an air source heat pump system to provide heat via radiators, this would be fed by a 21.00kW PV system to the South facing roof comprising of 84 modules.

The premises was using bottled gas to power there heating system which proved expensive and inefficient due the age of the boilers.  The recommended system provided a clean, economical and efficient method of providing there heating and electricity throughout the year.

The table below highlights the financial benefits of installing a renewable heat source.

Should the building be suitable there are further financial benefits available in the form of the Renewable Heat Incentive.  This scheme is currently available for non – domestic properties and pays the end user for the heat generated over a 20 year period.  This income combined with the savings on fuel creates an excellent return on investment.

Provide You Own Electricity Using Solar PV

Although the air source heat pump system installed operates at three times the efficiency of the existing bottled gas system it still requires an electrical input to operate.  As our client envisaged a self-sufficient form of heating we recommended installing a Solar PV array which would indirectly provide the required demand.  The table below shows the impact of the PV system and the effect it has on the running costs of the heat pumps.

Savings and Earnings

There are currently incentives in place for clients who install solar PV.  The Feed in Tariff is a government backed incentive which pays the end user for the electricity generated over a 20 year period.  On top of this there is also the savings on electricity used at the premises, should the PV system produce more electricity than the building demands the excess is sold back to the grid.

The table below shows how solar PV benefited Berger Tools;

The figures show the annual income from the solar PV outweighs the running cost of the new heating system.  The payback periods, efficiency and reliability of each system make  this self-sustainable setup a viable option and protects against rapidly increasing energy costs.
