Ground Source Heat Pumps

Enviko installs and services ground source heat pumps to a wide array of clients to both commercial and private sectors. We work closely with our suppliers installing the best equipment to make sure that our systems are going to perform to their maximum potential ensuring our clients get maximum value and complete satisfaction from their investment.

Benefits to Owning a Ground Source Heat Pump

  • Reduce your current fuel bills, especially when replacing a conventional oil and electric heating system.
  • Earn an income from the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) and also receive a £1250 grant to help towards the installation cost.
  • Reduce your home’s carbon emissions.
  • Heat your home and also provide hot water
  • Can provide cooling in the summer and heating in the winter.
  • Integrate with solar thermal and solar pv to reduce your bills further
  • A well designed ground source heat pump system is likely to increase the sale value of your property.

ground source heat pump collects heat from the ground and similarly uses a compressor to raise the temperature for heating a building. The benefit of a GSHP is that the temperature of the ground varies very little over the year, ensuring that efficiency of the system remains fairly constant in all weather conditions, meaning it has an overall higher co-efficient of performance (COP).

Ground source heat pump installation from Enviko
A ground source heat pump features ground loops, which are loops of pipes that are buried underground. These pipes are typically installed adjacent to the building, and a heat pump is installed inside the building, which replaces the conventional boiler. A water mixture (the mix typically includes antifreeze) is circulated through these pipes. This mixture absorbs heat from the ground and returns to the heat pump. Here the heat is transferred to a refrigerant, which is compressed, increasing the temperature, and then the heat is released into the building.

Another option is to use bore holes, these are vertical holes drilled into the earth with piping which gives the same result as ground loops. Vertical pipe installations are more suitable for sites with limited land requiring a bore hole of 50-100m but require a specialist boring rig which makes these installations more expensive.

Ground Source Heat Pumps provide a flow temperature of 50-55 degrees, which is ideal for underfloor heating.  Ground works can be messy, and it’s ideal to plan a GSHP when constructing a new build property, however they can be integrated into existing systems.
