What Kind of Biomass Fuel is right for your heating?

pros and cons of each fuel type

Wood Pellets

Wood Pellets

When it comes to biomass boilers, wood pellet boilers are the most common and offer the greatest ease of use. A consistent option, pellet boilers can be fully automatic or hand fed, the latter will require refueling once a week at the most.

Wood pellets are made to EN-Plus Standards with less than 12% moisture content. With a high calorific value and density, pellets are affordable and extremely efficient.

The UK is amongst the countries with the highest users of wood pellets in Europe, pellets are an attractive option because of the stability in prices. Pellets can be bought by the pallet load (10kg or 15kg) which is ideal for domestic usage.

Ideal for domestic and commercial applications up to 170kW – clean and easy with fully automated systems.

Ideally you should be using well seasoned split logs with a moisture content which is below 20%, the moisture content reflects the calorific value of the wood. Logs are the cheapest of all types of fuel but require more manual handling.

Ideal for farmers, saw mills, land owners and tree surgeons

Wood Chips

Wood Chips

With wood chips, moisture content is very important and it ideally should be around 35%. Wood chips offer the ability to use your own woodland which can be significantly cheaper than other options.

Woodchip biomass boilers can be auger fed from a chip store which can be sized to suit the output of the system and loaded with a bucket, loader or tipper.

Ideally suited to farms, golf clubs and country estates.

The table below summarises the pros and cons of each fuel type
